The Final Conference of BATsGRAPH Project, focused in the promotion of Best Available Techniques to reduce the impact of the environmental impact of the European printing industry while keeping its competitiveness, was held on last 15th December at the facilities of the Fundación Comunidad Valenciana Región Europea in Brussels.

The consortium of the project, led by AIDO, presented the results of the project to the main entities related to the sustainability of the European printing industry, like INTERGRAF, International Confederation for Printing and Allied Industries, and the European Commission by means of representatives from the Environment Directorate-General and Entreprises and Industry Directorate-General.

Other experts also participated, like the paper manufacturer SAPPI or the Graphic Association of Denmark, who provided their knowledge and experience about different issues related with the sustainability of the printing industry, like the legislation on industrial emissions, energy efficiency, enviromental impact of the paper, ecolabelling, carbon footprint, ecodesign or the Environmental Compliance Assistance Programme for SMEs (ECAP).

The conference concluded with a discussion about the main challenges to be faced by the European printing industry when improving its sustainability, which include the following:

  • Adaptation to new requirements, introducing the sustainability into business strategy, as a tool of competitiveness, beyond compliance with the legislation or the response to specific customer requirements.
  • Improvement of communication with direct and end customers on the real environmental impact of the activity of the printing industry. In this sense it becomes necessary to homogenize and to simplify regulations and eco-labelling systems.
  • To know and exploit existing tools developed by various associations, consulting firms and technological centers.
  • To coexist with electronic devices, determining clearly the advantages and environmental disadvantages of their use.

BATsGRAPH is a project part financed by the European Commission under the LIFE + programme, which has been developed by the Industrial Association of Optics Color and Imaging (AIDO), the Clean Technologies Center (CTL), the Foundation Comunidad Valenciana-Región Europa (FCVRE), the Consultancy Centre of the Royal Dutch Printing Association (KVGO Dienstecentrum) and ENVIROS s.r.o, coming from Czech Republic, Holland and Spain.

BATsGRAPH Project has developed an etool which guides the Sheet Fed printers in the reduction of Isopropilic Alcohol (IPA) and use of vegetable Inks which is available without charge in the website www.batsgraph.com.
